Regardless of what we may think of Netanyahu and the claims and accusations against him, I just don’t think he has that much freedom of action. The same applies to all Israeli PMs and governments.

He is leading a coalition/war time government. The IDF is a major, if not THE most important, institution in the country. Unless I’m mistaken, other than Ben Gurion and Meir, most PMs have been retired generals, usually the Chief of the IDF. When we combine this with the fact that just about everyone, male and female, serves in the IDF, then you have a major constituency for defence and agressive action against anyone that threatens the state’s existence or the Israeli population.

From what I’ve read and observed, most Jews and certainly Israelis see Zionism as fundamental to the Jewish religion and the right to exist in peace of Israel and the Jewish people. And this whether they are left, right, or center. There are extreme pacifists on the left, who would do pretty much anything to accommodate the Arabs. On the other hand, there are extreme bigots on the right who harass and oppress the Arabs in the West Bank. The settlements are a continuing sore point, and I don’t blame the Arabs and moderates who see these actions as provocations.

The two-state solution is the only viable long-term option. By long term, I mean maybe a century, until such time as the Palestinians themselves recognize that there is no way they are going to destroy Israel. That will only happen when, as Golda Meir said, the Arabs care as much about their lives and those of their children as the Israelis do theirs.
